DESCRIPTION
Garrison with clock and candlesticks; France, late nineteenth century.
Belgian marble and bronze.
Measurements: 47 x 29 x 15 cm (clock).
Late 19th century French harness composed of a sculptural table clock and two four-light candelabra, the three pieces made of bronze, with marble bases. The clock follows a classicist design, with a high base that houses the dial, in black and red marble, and an upper sculpture of patinated bronze in round bulk, with the representation of an ancient philosopher, dressed in tunic and crowned with laurel, seated on a low throne of Roman inspiration. The dial has Roman numerals in gold on a black background, and Breguet hands. The candelabra look like a three-dimensional transposition of the Mannerist "raffaeleschi", which are in fact a 16th century interpretation of Roman ornamental motifs. Thus, on the base of marble and gilded bronze, high and stepped, there is a shaft composed of several superimposed bodies, from whose upper area depart four arms determined by fine vegetal scrolls, culminating in lighters in the form of classical vases.
