Travel or carriage clock with an architectural structure raised on a base, made of gilded bronze, and featuring a handle on the top for easy transport. The piece features a white dial with black Roman numerals and a sub-dial. The side and front panels are made of beveled glass, as is the hinged back door, which allows a view of the movement. This type of clock became very popular in the 19th century.
The movement bears the hallmark of Japy Frères, one of the most prestigious firms in late-19th-century Europe, founded in the middle of the century by Frédéric Guillaume, Louis Frédéric, and Jean Pierre, sons of the renowned watchmaker Frédéric Japy, who had previously laid the foundations for modern watchmaking.
