This painting, from the Spanish school, takes up the pictorial genre of church and palace interiors, which began in Flanders in the Baroque period. A cloister, which we glimpse in the background, filters the languid light of the evening, which draws long shadows on the ground and impregnates the atmosphere with bold backlights. In the foreground, a stone lion guards the stately staircase. Next to her, pages attend to their lords, and a monk waits next to the confessional. Medieval armor with a spear adorns the palace hall.
