DESCRIPTION

MAISON ROUGIER. France/Canada. Lamp model "Shell", ca. 1970.
Mother-of-pearl methacrylate shade and gilded metal structure.
In good overall condition, with slight signs of use consistent with its age.
Measurements: 106 x 40 x 40 cm.

Living room lamp made by Maison Rougier around 1970, corresponding to the well-known "Shell" model, one of the most recognizable typologies of the firm for its marked sculptural character and its expressive use of synthetic materials. The piece is articulated by a succession of curved sheets of pearly methacrylate, arranged around a golden metal axis, which generate a helical silhouette of organic inspiration, close to the shape of a seashell in the process of opening.
The interest of the lamp lies both in its volumetric presence and in the light treatment of the material. The translucent methacrylate, with veins and pearly shades, acts as a light diffuser, transforming the inner source into a warm and enveloping glow. When lit, the surface reveals a rich internal vibration, reinforcing the decorative effect and the almost object-like dimension of the piece.

Maison Rougier developed during the central decades of the 20th century a production particularly appreciated by the vintage design market, characterized by the use of acrylics, resins and pearly surfaces in compositions of strong visual impact. His luminaires are inscribed in the context of the decorative design of the seventies, close to the Space Age taste and experimentation with plastic materials, where the lamp ceases to be understood only as a functional object to become a sculptural element within the domestic space.
