The Château Haut-Brion wine was classified Premier Grand Cru in the Official Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855 (it was the only non-Médoc estate included in this classification). The winery is located in Pessac, within the Graves region, and belongs to the Bordeaux wine region. Although it is believed that the vine was already in the region in the times of Ancient Rome, the oldest document referring to the cultivation dates back to 1423. Château Haut-Brion dates back to 1525, when Jean de Pontac married Jeanne de Bellon, who brought the land of Haut-Brion as a dowry. Since then, Château Haut-Brion has belonged to illustrious owners: admirals, an archbishop, a Marshal of France, etc. In the 1960s, Haut-Brion was the first of the Grandes Crus to innovate with new stainless steel fermentation vats, and in 1976 the 1970 vintage achieved fourth place among ten French and Californian reds in the historic Judgment of Paris wine competition.
