Château Margaux embodies rigor, finesse and elegance. With its wines and its magnificent architecture, Château Margaux is one of the legendary Crus, sensual, purebred and worked by men in an exceptional terroir. It is one of the four of the four wines included in the category of first crus in the Official Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855. The estate, located in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, has been occupied since the 12th century, but did not begin to produce wine in any significant way until the 16th century, with the arrival of the Lestonnac family. By 1700 the estate covered its current 165 hectares, and the 78 hectares devoted to vines have remained essentially unchanged since then. In the 19th century it was a famous wine, mentioned by Thomas Jefferson in his personal classification, and its status was confirmed by the 1855 classification. Usually, Château Margaux wine is made from 75% Caubernet Sauvignon grapes, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is one of the most expensive wines in the world, and around 30,000 cases are produced per year, with production split between the famous Premier Cru and the second wine Pavillon Rouge. A small amount of Sauvignon Blanc is also grown to make the Pauvillon Blanc wine. The average age of the vines at Château Margaux is thirty-five years.
