The name Château Lafite Rothschild comes from the Carruades plateau, a site with numerous plots adjacent to the château that was acquired in 1845. Throughout the 19th century, the wines of the Carruades were marketed independently until they were merged with the rest of the production. The name "Carruades" was later taken up again for the second wine of Château Lafite. Initially known as "Moulin des Carruades", it was renamed "Carruades de Lafite" from the 1980s onwards, becoming the name used today.
