BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ALBERTO PLA RUBIO (Villanueva de Castellón, Valencia, 1867 – Barcelona, 1937).
“Peasant Women.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 30 x 50 cm; 53 x 71 cm (frame).
In this genre painting, Alberto Pla Rubio depicts a scene of rural life featuring several peasant women carrying large bundles of firewood. An image that evokes the world of farm work and the harshness of women’s daily tasks, yet rendered from a gentle perspective with a distinctly idyllic character. The scene stands out for its luminous atmosphere and spontaneous treatment, with very loose and fluid brushstrokes that lend freshness and dynamism to the composition. The artist dispenses with minute detail to capture the overall impression of the landscape and the figures, giving special prominence to color and the effects of light.
A painter primarily focused on social themes, Pla Rubio completed his artistic studies at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he was a student of Alejandro Ferrant, and later expanded his training at the San Carlos Academy in Valencia and in the studio of Ignacio Pinazo. He participated in numerous exhibitions, winning first prize at the 1895 National Fine Arts Exhibition for his painting “¡A la guerra!” and receiving an honorable mention for first prize in the 1901 edition for “¡Pobres madres!”. He was awarded the same honor in 1899 at the General Exhibition of Fine Arts held in Barcelona, as well as at the 1913 Munich Exhibition. He was also awarded the second medal at the 1901 Paris Salon. He combined painting with teaching, a profession he practiced at the Academies of Fine Arts in Valencia and Cádiz, as well as at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona beginning in 1903. After an early period characterized by anecdotal scenes, a realistic style, and meticulous brushwork, his style evolved into a mature, impressionistic style, combined with a focus on light influenced by Sorolla and a much looser technique. Currently, Pla Rubio’s work is represented in the Prado Museum (a work on loan to the Alcalá de Henares City Hall), the Nelson Zúmel Collection at the Provincial Museum of Lugo, the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia, and the MACBA in Barcelona, among others.
