DESCRIPTION

LUIS JIMENEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1845 – Pontoise, France, 1928).
“The Return from the Baptism.”
Oil on canvas.

Measurements: 60 x 50 cm; 84 x 72 cm (frame).
In this composition, Luis Jiménez Aranda recreates an intimate genre scene depicting a family’s return home after a baptism celebration. A group of figures, dressed in their finest attire, gathers around the newborn—wrapped in delicate shawls—in an atmosphere of celebration and domestic warmth. Jiménez Aranda approaches this subject with particular attention to the narrative quality of the scene, transforming an everyday episode into a composition highlighted by the detailed rendering of the costumes, the arrangement of the figures, and the interior setting—elements that reveal his mastery of drawing and his ability to capture gestures and postures.
Initially trained alongside his brothers José and Manuel, he completed his studies at the Santa Isabel de Hungría Academy of Fine Arts in Seville, where he was a student of Eduardo Cano de la Peña. In 1867, he moved to Rome to further his training, and beginning in 1876, he settled in France, first in Paris and later in Pontoise. He enjoyed a distinguished international career, participating in the Paris Salons and the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid, where he received an honorable mention in 1864 and first prize in 1892 for *The Doctor’s Visit*. This same composition had received a major award at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. He also won an award at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
Specializing in history painting and genre scenes, Jiménez Aranda is considered one of the leading representatives of 19th-century Spanish realism. His work is held in major collections, including the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Meadows Museum in Dallas, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
