The work continues the Spanish still-life tradition through a composition with a distinctly decorative character, organized around the large slice of watermelon that dominates the center of the scene. Its intense red color, enhanced by the dark background, serves as the main visual focal point and ties together the arrangement of peaches, berries, leaves, and pumpkins arranged around a wicker basket.
The painting combines precise brushwork on the seeds, fruits, and the basket’s weave with a looser style in the foliage and shaded areas. The concentrated lighting enhances the textures and color hallmarks, while the butterfly hovering in the upper right corner introduces an element of lightness and dynamism. The frontal composition, the neutral background, and the careful rendering of each individual food item draw on traditional still-life models, reinterpreted here with a folk sensibility and a clear focus on visual impact.
