DESCRIPTION

PEDRO MARTÍNEZ TAVERA (Palencia, 1912–21st century).
“Portrait of Luis Puerto.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 60 x 50 cm; 73 x 62 cm (frame).
Pedro Martínez Tavera constructs the image through an interpretation of remarkable expressive power, in which the face takes on a central role. The characterization of the subject and the pictorial treatment contribute to giving the portrait a psychological dimension, making the human figure the center of attention and endowing it with a particular intensity. In contrast to an idealized conception of portraiture, the work seems to prioritize the subject’s individuality. The interest of this painting also lies in its connection to the historical memory of La Alberca. The portrait is iconographically linked to a photograph of Luis Puerto taken by the Valencian painter Ismael Blat in the 1930s, an image included in the historical and iconographic compilation *Memoria Visual de La Alberca*, promoted by the Salamanca-born writer and folklorist José Luis Puerto. This connection places the work within the context of the recovery of a community’s visual memory, where photographs and artistic representations help preserve the identity of its inhabitants and the traces of their past.
Pedro Martínez Tavera was a Spanish painter, professor, and visual artist closely tied to the artistic and cultural scene of his time. The brother of fellow painter Antonio Martínez Tavera, he pursued a career that combined painting with teaching and his involvement in the Círculo de Bellas Artes. His body of work encompasses religious and historical themes, notably *Mártires Agustinos* (1963), housed at the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. His work has also been exhibited in galleries and specialized art markets.
