The “Wastend” series is a pictorial exploration of urban memory, obsolescence, and the contradictions of consumer society. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of abandoned cars on the streets of New York during the 1970s, Tony Lee Almarch constructs scenes with a distinctly cinematic quality, where dilapidated vehicles and urban spaces take on a symbolic dimension. Through realistic figuration, a palette dominated by grays, and a carefully studied use of chiaroscuro, the artist recreates atmospheres of decay and abandonment, paying special attention to the textures of metal, hallmarks of light, and the city’s architecture. These compositions transcend the documentary genre to prompt reflection on the passage of time, the fragility of material progress, and the transformation of consumer objects into relics of an era.
Tony Lee Almarch’s career began in the realm of urban art and muralism, participating in interventions and collective projects alongside other national artists. In recent years, he has shifted his focus toward studio painting and large-format works, translating his interest in the urban landscape, architecture, and the deterioration of objects into realistic compositions, such as those in the *Wastend* series.
