DESCRIPTION
Roman handle decorated with the head of a satyr or Silenus. 1st–2nd centuries A.D.
Bronze with an oxidation patina.
Provenance: private collection of M. S., Barcelona.
Measurements: 9.7 cm high.
A Roman-era bronze handle, possibly from a vessel used for domestic or ceremonial purposes. It features an elongated, slightly curved handle decorated with incised moldings, culminating in a figurative appliqué depicting a bearded male head with pronounced features, a full head of hair, and protruding ears. The depiction, with its gestural expression and pronounced treatment of volumes, can be linked to the iconography of satyrs or sileni, figures associated with the retinue of Dionysus (Bacchus in the Roman tradition). The surface retains a patina of green and brown hues.
Dionysian motifs were widespread in Roman decorative arts, especially in the ornamentation of metal vessels used for serving wine. The heads of satyrs and sileni were frequently used as finials and handle appliqués, integrating figurative decoration into the functional elements of the pieces.
