DESCRIPTION
Attributed to LUIGI CACCIA DOMINIONI (Milan, 1913–2016).
Set of four armchairs. Italy, 1960s.
Black metal frame with brass accents and black leather upholstery.
Good vintage condition.
Measurements: 69 x 61 x 72 cm. Seat height: 40 cm.
The four chairs now up for auction combine the volume of the black-upholstered seats and backs with a slender metal frame, enhanced by brass finials and curved crossbars. Armless and with a slightly sloping backrest, they feature an open composition and balanced proportions. The choice of materials and the treatment of details allow them to be linked to the design language of Luigi Caccia Dominioni and support their attribution.
Luigi Caccia was a key figure in postwar Italian design. In 1947, he founded Azucena alongside Ignazio Gardella and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua, initially conceived to produce furniture and objects for their own architectural projects. The firm would become one of the leading names in Milanese design due to its special attention to materials, artisanal craftsmanship, and the relationship between furniture and interior space. Caccia Dominioni’s work is represented, among other institutions, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which houses several pieces produced by Azucena.
