A pendant lamp crafted from yellow Murano glass, representative of the formal and material experimentation characteristic of mid-20th-century Italian design. Its design combines the chromatic expressiveness of handcrafted glass with a functional and innovative approach to lighting. The shade incorporates a swivel mechanism that allows the light bulb to be concealed, altering the piece’s appearance and creating different visual and lighting effects. The model reflects the research conducted by Carlo Nason in collaboration with the Mazzega firm, which is rooted in the Murano glassmaking tradition and renowned for its sculptural lighting designs. The combination of artisanal techniques and modern solutions places this piece within the evolution of Italian design in the 1960s, when glass took on a leading role in the creation of contemporary lighting fixtures.
Carlo Nason was an Italian designer born in Murano, a member of a historic family of master glassmakers. Although he studied economics and business administration, his true training took place in the family workshop, where he learned traditional glassmaking techniques and explored the material’s formal possibilities. Between 1965 and 1980, he collaborated with the firm A.V. Mazzega, creating lighting fixtures that combine Murano craftsmanship with a modern and experimental aesthetic. His work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Triennale di Milano in 2015. His designs are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Murano Glass Museum.
