BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE (Germany, 1886 – U.S., 1969).
Set of 6 “MR10” chairs, designed in 1927.
Chrome-plated metal and leather upholstery.
In good condition, with visible signs of wear consistent with its age and use.
Measurements: 82 x 49 x 77 cm (x6).
A set of six chairs that embodies the essential principles of the Modern Movement, characterized by formal purity and technical innovation. Its chrome-plated tubular steel frame, curved in a continuous line and without rear legs, creates an elegant cantilever effect, providing flexibility and a unique sense of lightness. The black leather upholstery provides a subtle hallmark of simplicity against the metallic sheen of the frame, reinforcing its timeless character.
Designed in 1927 in collaboration with Lilly Reich, the MR10 model was presented at the exhibition *Die Wohnung* (*The Dwelling*), organized by the Deutscher Werkbund in the Weissenhof experimental housing estate in Stuttgart. The project explored new ways of living through the integration of architecture, furniture, and industrial design. Inspired by research on cantilevered structures pioneered by Mart Stam, Mies and Reich’s design stood out for the elegance of its curves and the flexibility of steel, radically transforming the traditional concept of seating.
An architect and designer, Mies van der Rohe trained under Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens before establishing his own studio in Berlin. From 1930 to 1933, he directed the Bauhaus, and in 1938, he emigrated to the United States, where he pursued a distinguished academic and architectural career. The creator of iconic works such as the German Pavilion in Barcelona (1929) and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin (1968), he became a leading figure in 20th-century architectural rationalism and design.
