Víctor Mira’s Caminantes series is one of the most recognizable groups of works in his body of work, created primarily during the 1980s and 1990s. These works feature schematic, solitary, and vertical human figures that advance or appear to move through undefined spaces. Rather than depicting real walkers, Mira uses these figures as symbols of the human condition: beings in transit, marked by solitude, the search for meaning, and the existential experience. The bodies are often reduced to dark or gestural silhouettes, constructed with dense brushstrokes and a strong expressive charge—characteristics of his artistic language, which is close to Neo-Expressionism.
Víctor Mira pursued a multidisciplinary career as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and writer. Following his first solo exhibition at the N’Art Gallery in Zaragoza, he maintained close ties with Germany and divided his time between that country and Barcelona; in 1972 he participated in the Encuentros de Pamplona, where he met John Cage, and in 1980 he held a solo exhibition at the George Staempfli Gallery in New York. victormira.com His work is held in collections such as those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the MACBA.
