The CHANEL Double Flap, circa 1989–1991, is one of the most iconic designs in the French fashion house’s leather goods collection and a standout example of Karl Lagerfeld’s reinterpretation of Gabrielle Chanel’s legacy. Its history dates back to the famous 2.55 bag, created in February 1955, whose fundamental innovation was the addition of a chain to carry it over the shoulder and free a woman’s hands. In 1983, Lagerfeld revisited this concept and transformed it into the Classic Flap, introducing the signature swivel clasp featuring the interlocking double C and establishing a silhouette that would become an international icon. Dating from between 1989 and 1991, this piece belongs to a particularly significant period in the evolution of the classic handbag, when the design codes established by Lagerfeld had already taken on an identity of their own. The models from these years stand out for their direct connection to the early reinterpretations of the 2.55 and for preserving the distinctive aesthetic of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
