DESCRIPTION

GEORGE BRAQUE (France, 1882–1963).
“Letters from Jean Paulhan and Braque’s replies.”
Includes two lithographs on Arches paper. Copy 103/203.
Publisher: Pierre Bordas, Paris. 1984.
Texts and correspondence curated by Castor Seibel; lithographs curated by Fernand Mourlot.
Measurements: 31 x 24 cm (x2); 34 x 26 cm (box).
Artist’s book featuring facsimile correspondence between Georges Braque and Jean Paulhan, accompanied by two original lithographs by Braque. A bibliographic and artistic collection that brings together two letters by Jean Paulhan and four replies by Georges Braque, reproduced in facsimile, along with two original lithographs by the artist. The publication offers a record of the intellectual dialogue between the painter and the writer, whose relationship revolved around artistic creation, visual language, and the principles of Cubism.
The correspondence provides insight into Braque’s thinking on the representation of space, the relationship between form and color, and the evolution of his pictorial language. The lithographs, presented by the renowned printer Fernand Mourlot, complete this limited edition, conceived as a convergence of aesthetic reflection, historical documentation, and original graphic work.
Georges Braque began his training at the School of Fine Arts in Le Havre. He then moved to Paris, where he continued his studies with a master decorator and at the Académie Humbert. He began his career as part of the Fauvist movement, but in the fall of 1907, the Cézanne retrospective and the friendship he formed with Picasso led him to change his style. The work of both artists, closely intertwined, gave rise to and shaped Cubism. Georges Braque is represented at MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim in New York; the Musée d’Orsay in Paris; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, among many others.
