Illustrated album with texts by Patrick Waldberg and 19 original color lithographs by Max Ernst. This work is a collaboration between Max Ernst, a key figure in European Surrealism, and Patrick Waldberg, a writer, art critic, and historian associated with the Surrealist circle. The collection brings together Waldberg’s literary universe with Ernst’s visual imagination, characterized by the free association of images, the metamorphosis of forms, and an iconography with dreamlike resonances. The work was not conceived as a mere collection of decorative prints, but rather as an artist’s book in which literature and image complement one another. The work can also be read as an extension of the intellectual friendship between the two: Waldberg met Ernst in 1932 and later wrote an important monograph on the artist.
Max Ernst was a painter, sculptor, and printmaker who played a pivotal role in the development of Dadaism and Surrealism. He studied philosophy, art history, psychology, and psychiatry at the University of Bonn, although his artistic training was essentially self-taught. His work stood out for its experimentation with collage and techniques such as frottage and grattage. His works are represented in major international collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.
