Josep Guinovart trained at the School of Master Painters, the School of Arts and Crafts, and in classes at the FAD. He held his first solo exhibition at the Syra Galleries in Barcelona in 1948. He quickly gained a solid reputation, collaborated with *Dau al Set*, and participated in the October, Jazz, and Eleven Salons. In the 1950s, he lived in Paris, where he became thoroughly acquainted with the work of Cézanne and Matisse, who, along with Miró and Gaudí, would become his most significant influences. In 1955, together with Aleu, Cuixart, Muxart, Mercadé, Tàpies, and Tharrats, he formed the Taüll group, which brought together the avant-garde artists of the time. He also participated in the Biennales of São Paulo, Alexandria, and Venice. Among his awards are the City of Barcelona Prize, the National Prize for the Visual Arts, and the Generalitat’s Prize for the Visual Arts. His work is represented in the Museums of Modern Art in Barcelona, Madrid, and Mexico City; the Open-Air Sculpture Museum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife; the Reina Sofía National Art Center; the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum; the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián; the Eusebio Sempere Museum in Alicante, the Navarre Museum in Tafalla, the Casa de las Américas in Havana, the Museum of Bochum in Germany, the Long Island Museum of Fine Arts in New York, and the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid.
