BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

PABLO PICASSO (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, France, 1973).
“Picasso. Painting–Drawing–Print. Sala Gaspar,” 1968.
Lithograph in black and brown on Guarro paper, print no. 271/1000.
Numbered in pencil. Signed and dated in pencil “12/21/68. Picasso.”
Published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona, with the gallery’s dry stamp.
Produced on the occasion of the exhibition “Picasso: Painting, Drawing, Prints,” Sala Gaspar, Barcelona, March 1968.
Measurements: 76.5 x 56.5 cm.

Created for the exhibition that Sala Gaspar dedicated to Picasso in March 1968, the lithograph reflects the extraordinary creative vitality of his final years. The musketeer’s face, rendered with spontaneous and energetic lines, connects with one of the most characteristic iconographies of this period—precisely when the artist was also developing the famous Suite 347. The historical figure is transformed into an expressive, almost theatrical presence through a deliberate simplification of features, loops, and calligraphic marks.

The writing itself forms part of the image: “Sala Gaspar,” “Picasso,” and “Painting-Drawing-Print” are integrated into the portrait to the point of blurring the boundary between word and drawing. The limited color palette, restricted to black and sanguine tones, reinforces the immediacy of the composition and preserves the gestural quality of the original drawing. The work is also of particular interest for documenting Picasso’s close relationship with the gallery owners Joan and Miquel Gaspar, who played a key role in promoting his work in Barcelona from the mid-1950s onward.

Pablo Picasso was one of the defining figures of 20th-century art and a key player in some of its major transformations, from Cubism to the radical freedom of his late work. His practice spanned painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, and an extensive body of graphic work, always marked by continuous formal experimentation. In 1939, the Museum of Modern Art in New York dedicated the historic retrospective *Picasso: Forty Years of His Art* to him, definitively cementing his international reputation. Throughout his career, he was the subject of numerous institutional exhibitions, and his work is represented in major international collections, including MoMA, the Musée Picasso in Paris, the Reina Sofía Museum, and the Museu Picasso in Barcelona.
