The work depicts one of the most widespread Marian iconographies in the Hispanic world: the Virgin of Mount Carmel, recognizable by her Carmelite habit and the scapulars held by Mary and the Child. This attribute refers to the tradition according to which the Virgin gave the scapular to Saint Simon Stock, making it the emblem of the order and a sign of spiritual protection. Its repeated presence in the composition particularly emphasizes the devotional purpose of the painting.
The frontal orientation of the figures and the absence of a narrative framework focus attention on the sacred nature of the image. The Virgin’s triangular silhouette is formed by her wide blue mantle, embellished with plant motifs, whose ornamental treatment is a hallmark of simplicity compared to the brown habit. The crown and the scapulars complete a depiction designed to be immediately recognizable to the faithful.
With its restrained modeling, the serene expressions on the faces, and the prominence given to the textile and symbolic elements, the canvas is reminiscent of 18th-century Spanish-American devotional painting. This type of imagery adapted European models into a more frontal and decorative style, suitable for chapels and convents as well as for spaces of domestic devotion. The balanced full-length composition and the clear depiction of the Carmelite attributes lend the work particular iconographic interest.
