The composition depicts the episode of the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, with Saint John the Baptist positioned on the right side of the scene, pouring water over Jesus’ head. The Forerunner holds his characteristic reddish cloak while performing the ritual gesture of baptism. Christ appears above the waters, clothed only in the garment of purity.
He humbly bows his head and keeps his hands clasped over his chest, in an attitude of contemplation and acceptance of the mystery being revealed. Above, God the Father contemplates the scene, emphasizing the divine and transcendent dimension of the event.
The Baptism of Christ is one of the fundamental episodes in Christian iconography and a theme of extraordinary significance in the history of Western art. Narrated in the four Gospels, it represents the beginning of Jesus’ public life and the manifestation of his divine nature. Its theological significance is closely linked to the sacrament of Baptism, understood as a rite of Christian initiation, purification, and spiritual rebirth. The work is part of the 18th-century Italian pictorial tradition, in which Gospel subjects continued to be addressed through compositions of an intimate scale and with a clear devotional intent. The arrangement of the figures around the baptismal scene, Christ’s restrained gestures, and the hierarchical ordering of the characters all help to focus attention on the spiritual significance of the episode.
