DESCRIPTION

JUAN SÁNCHEZ COTÁN (Orgaz, Toledo, 1560 – Granada, 1627).
“Still Life.”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Accompanied by an art-historical report prepared by Mr. Ignacio González Panicello.
Measurements: 53 × 42 cm; 72 × 61 cm (frame).
Compositional restraint and the intense contrast between light and shadow characterize this still life, in which carrots and several thistle stalks are arranged on a windowsill, silhouetted against a dark background. The apparent simplicity of the elements is marked by care in their depiction: each vegetable takes on an almost tangible presence thanks to the precision of the drawing, the gradation of tones, and the study of light, which defines the volumes and casts shadows onto the stone surface.
The composition evokes one of the most characteristic features of Juan Sánchez Cotán’s painting: the creation of geometric spaces, resembling niches or windows, in which everyday objects seem suspended between reality and pictorial illusion. The arrangement of the vegetables, the contrast between the curved forms and the architectural lines, and the depth of the background transform a domestic scene into an exercise of great visual rigor. The result is an image of powerful presence, in which nature is stripped of superfluous elements and subjected to a careful compositional order. A key point of reference is the *Still Life with Game, Vegetables, and Fruit* (1602), housed at the Museo Nacional del Prado, where the artist arranges thistles, carrots, fruit, and game in a similarly structured space. Also particularly similar is *Still Life with Thistle and Carrots*, from the Museum of Fine Arts in Granada, which shares with this composition a focus on a few plant elements and the austerity of its approach. These works highlight the importance of a repertoire of motifs and compositional solutions that Sánchez Cotán developed with extraordinary consistency and that would exert a lasting influence on 17th-century Spanish painting.
Juan Sánchez Cotán spent much of his artistic career in the city of Toledo, where he worked as a painter of religious subjects, portraits, and still lifes. His most notable contribution was the consolidation of the Spanish still life in the early 17th century, a genre in which he achieved a unique combination of naturalistic precision, geometric balance, and dramatic lighting. In 1603, he entered the Carthusian Order as a lay brother and moved to Granada, where he continued to devote himself primarily to religious painting, although his name remains linked to the renewal of still life in Spain.
