GORTZIUS GELDORP (Leuven, 1553 – Cologne, 1618),
“Magdalene”.
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 62 x 50 cm; 78 x 70 cm (frame).
This work follows a compositional model that finds a direct parallel in Gortzius Geldorp’s Penitent Magdalene, housed at the Mauritshuis in The Hague (inventory no. 319), which is also on panel and of similar dimensions (67 × 52 cm). The similarity in format and the connection to a work cataloged under the painter’s name allow us to situate this painting within the circulation of devotional models associated with his oeuvre, although the exact relationship between the two versions must be established through a comparative examination of their details and execution.
Geldorp pursued his career between the Netherlands and Germany, in an artistic context marked by the circulation of painters, models, and iconographic formulas among the major cities of northern Europe. Trained in Antwerp under Frans Francken the Elder and Frans Pourbus the Elder, he distinguished himself particularly as a portraitist, though he also tackled religious and mythological subjects. His career helped bring the refinement of the Flemish tradition to the courtly circles of Cologne, the city where he lived for much of his life.
The connection to the Mauritshuis example is therefore a significant reference for the cataloging of this panel, both in terms of identifying the subject and its link to a model preserved in a prestigious museum collection. The work offers insight into the spread of the image of Mary Magdalene in European painting of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, when depictions of saints intended for private devotion became a prominent feature in domestic interiors and private collections.
Gortzius Geldorp was a Flemish painter trained in Antwerp under Frans Francken the Elder and Frans Pourbus the Elder. Settling in Cologne, he achieved notable success as a portraitist of the aristocratic and courtly elites. His painting is distinguished by the precision of his drawing and his attention to detail. His work is included in major collections, such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
