CARL WILHELMS (Helsinki, 1889–1953).
Female Bust, 1937.
Bronze.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 46 x 50 x 20 cm.
This work, created in 1937 during the artist’s time in Russia, follows the classical aesthetic principles of the early decades of the 20th century, featuring sober, elegant, and expressive lines. The bust is characterized by a dark, uniform patina. It portrays the delicate features and serene demeanor of a young woman, with her hair sculpted and neatly pulled back, revealing the figure’s slender neck.
It displays exceptional craftsmanship in the polishing of the bronze, gently reflecting light on the metallic surface to highlight the volume and anatomy of the shoulders and face.
He was born in St. Petersburg (Russia) into a family of Nordic origin. Until 1920, he used the surname Svensson, before professionally and legally adopting the name Carl Wilhelms.
He studied at the Drawing School of the Finnish Art Society (as well as within the Nordic art scene of the early 20th century), where he developed a meticulous technique in modeling with plaster, marble, and terracotta, as well as bronze casting.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Wilhelms actively participated in numerous public sculpture competitions in Finland, gaining prominence in the Scandinavian art scene.
Toward the end of the 1940s and into the early 1950s, his small- and medium-sized sculptures achieved a very high level of appreciation among private collectors and galleries.
His works bridge traditional academic figuration, the stylized Art Deco of the 1930s, and a serene classicism expressed through human figures, female nudes, scenes of motherhood, and introspective portraits (such as his famous work *Meditator*).
He frequently worked with bronze featuring dark, warm patinas, as well as wood, plaster, and marble.
Presence in Collections: His works are part of public and museum collections in the Nordic countries (including the collection of the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, Norway) and continue to appear occasionally at international art auctions.
