Eduard Fortiny was a renowned Italian sculptor born in Florence, celebrated for his genre works, psychological portraits, and scenes of social realism. He had a prolific career spanning Italy and France, signing his works alternately as “Fortini” or under the French-style variant “Fortiny.” The artist is noted for his profound sensitivity toward the human condition, masterfully capturing the dignity of the working classes and the softness of feminine and childlike forms. He received his academic training as a student at the prestigious Florence School of Fine Arts. During the 1890s, he had his own sculpture studio on Via degli Artisti in the Tuscan capital. He soon made a name for himself creating solemn funerary and commemorative monuments in Florence, such as the monument to Massima Chiti (1887) and that of Virgilio and Corrado Roini (1891).
His work transcended borders, and he exhibited successfully in Milan and Rome before making the leap to Paris. Beginning in 1914, he became a regular exhibitor at the renowned Salon des Artistes Français. One of his most iconic public works is the bust dedicated to the playwright Carlo Goldoni (1906), located in Square Jean-XXIII, next to Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
