In this work, through the use of reflective surfaces and mirrors—whether fragmented or arranged at different angles—the piece refrains from presenting a single, stable, and definitive image. Its appearance transforms depending on the viewer’s position and movement: each change in viewpoint generates a new image, a different interpretation of space and the surrounding reality. The reflection thus ceases to be a mere reproduction of what lies before it and becomes a dynamic phenomenon, subject to movement, light, and individual perception. The viewer is not a passive observer but participates directly in the construction of the visual experience. The work is part of a series of graphic investigations developed by Julio Le Parc around 1995, focused on movement, color, and the phenomena of visual perception. This group of works brings together the compositions *Surface (Rotation de carrés)*, *Surface Couleur*, *Mirror*, and *Alchimie*—four complementary approaches to the expressive possibilities of geometry and the transformation of pictorial space.
A multidisciplinary artist associated with kinetic art, Julio Le Parc studied at the Prilidiano Peuyrredón School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, and in 1957 he began working within the abstract tradition. The following year, he moved to Paris on a French government scholarship, where he founded the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel and joined the Nouvelle Tendance group. In 1966, he held his first solo exhibition at the Sage Gallery in Howard (New York), and that same year he won first prize at the Venice Biennale. In 1967, he participated in a major group exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and in 1972, the first retrospective of his work was held in Düsseldorf. His work is currently represented in the Tate Gallery in London, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Proa Foundation in Buenos Aires, the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Colombia, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., among other public and private collections.
