RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 – Versailles, 1920).
"Portrait of a Young Man."
Oil on canvas.
Signed and inscribed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 61 x 53 cm. 75 x 68 cm. (frame).
In this delicate portrait, Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta demonstrates his extraordinary ability to combine precise drawing with a highly subtle painterly execution. The young woman’s oval face, with its fair and delicately modulated skin tones, concentrates the light and becomes the visual center of the composition. The nuanced transition between light and shadow, far from creating sharp hallmarks, helps to gently model the volumes and lend the figure a serene and natural presence.
The attention to individual features is one of the work’s main attractions. Madrazo does not limit himself to offering an idealized representation of feminine beauty, but rather seeks to endow the figure with her own identity through precise observation of her features and the restrained expressiveness of the composition as a whole. The elegance of the composition and the delicacy of the painterly treatment reflect a conception of portraiture in which technical virtuosity is placed at the service of characterizing the subject.
The son of Federico de Madrazo and grandson of José de Madrazo, Raimundo was raised within one of the most influential artistic dynasties of nineteenth-century Spain. After completing his training in Madrid, he settled in Paris in 1862, where he forged a career of international renown. Immersed in the French artistic milieu, he developed a personal style that combined the solidity of the academic tradition with the realist sensibility and aesthetic refinement of contemporary European painting. His exceptional talent for portraiture earned him a prominent place among the aristocratic clientele and the international upper middle class. In this genre, he stood out for the elegance of his compositions, the extraordinary delicacy of his modeling, and his mastery of a subtle palette. Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta’s work is represented in prominent international public collections, notably the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, which houses a significant body of his portraiture, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art
