Woven in wool and silk, it combines the solidity of the support with a refined chromatic richness that allows to recreate with subtlety the nuances of the nature and the figures.
The scene represents a group of children immersed in an outdoor game, specifically the traditional "jumping of the colt", in an idyllic landscape setting. The characters, dressed in clothing more reminiscent of courtly elegance than of real life, are arranged in a dynamic and lively composition, full of movement and grace. The landscape, with leafy trees, detailed vegetation and architecture in the background, creates a serene and harmonious atmosphere that frames the main action. The decorative border surrounding the scene, rich in vegetal and ornamental motifs, reinforces the luxurious character of the whole. This type of theme responds to the interest of the time for gentle, gallant and bucolic scenes, where childhood is idealized as a state of innocence and joy. The representation does not seek realism so much as the evocation of a refined and pleasant world, in tune with the spirit of Rococo.
The Aubusson Manufacture was one of the most important centers of tapestry production in France, rivaling other great manufactures such as the Gobelins. Its workshops specialized in the creation of decorative series destined to embellish aristocratic interiors, adapting pictorial models to the textile language with great skill. In this tapestry, this technical capacity can be appreciated in the gradation of colors, the representation of light and the meticulousness of the details, especially in the vegetation and clothing.
