Female figure of the Guangala culture. Ecuador, 500 B.C. - 500 A.D. Terracotta sculpture. Wooden base. Methacrylate showcase. Provenance: Spanish private collection J.J.D, who bought this collection in the Wilson Hallo Gallery in Ecuador, before 1970. With methacrylate urn belonging to an old collection of the 80s. Measurements: 8 x 4 x 3 cm (figure); 41,5 x 18 x 18 cm (box). Figurine of the Guangala culture, which flourished between 500 BC and 500 AD approximately, in the Ecuadorian provinces of Manabi and Guayas, between the semi-arid coasts and the fertile valleys of the Colonche mountains. They were a farming people, with corn as their main crop. The pottery was the most important part of their material culture. Although the ceramic figurines are less numerous than in other contemporary groups of the north (Bahia culture), they have been found in great number. Their forms range from highly realistic to fully stylized. Feminine and masculine figures can be identified.
