DESCRIPTION
Maya vessel, ca.450-650 A.D.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection, France.
Good state of preservation. Intact.
Measurements: 11,7 cm height; 17,5 cm. length.
Globular body vessel belonging to the Early Classic Mayan culture, characterized by its careful execution and rich pictorial decoration. This type of vessel was part of daily life as well as ceremonial contexts, being used to contain food, beverages or as offerings in funerary contexts.
The body has an engobed surface in reddish tones, on which a decorative band develops on the upper part. This frieze, executed in dark pigments, combines geometric motifs and rhythmically arranged rectangular shapes, possibly alluding to architectural elements, textiles or stylized symbols typical of the Mayan visual repertoire.
