DESCRIPTION
Fragment of mosaic with the image of two theatrical masks. Rome, 2nd - 3rd century A.D.
Marble tesserae.
Provenance: Private collection, Malibu, California, USA, acquired before 1980. New York Art Market until 2023.

Measurements: 47 x 100 cm; 59 x 110 cm (frame).
Important fragment of Roman mosaic made with marble tesserae, decorated with the representation of two theatrical masks arranged on an architectural or scenic structure. The composition preserves a remarkable visual richness, both for the chromatic variety of the tesserae and for the expressiveness of the faces, treated with marked features and great ornamental sense.
The motif of theatrical masks was especially appreciated in the Roman world, where it evoked Greek culture, spectacle, banquets and spaces of refined leisure. These images frequently appeared on the pavements of villas and aristocratic residences, associated with otium and the cultured taste of the elite. In this fragment, the masks function not only as a decorative motif, but as a direct allusion to the scenic universe and the theatrical tradition inherited from Hellenism.
The piece stands out for its large format and the quality of its iconographic reading. Despite being a fragment, it preserves a perfectly recognizable and balanced scene, with a horizontal composition of great presence. The contrast between the dark lines, the ochre, pink and gray tones, and the delicate modulation of the faces demonstrate the technical sophistication of the Roman mosaic workshops.
Adding to its artistic interest is a relevant provenance, documented in a private collection in Malibu, prior to 1980, and subsequently on the New York art market until 2023. This trajectory, together with its good state of conservation and its mounting on a modern support, reinforces its attractiveness for the collector of high archaeology.
Because of its size, theatrical iconography, decorative quality and ancient provenance in an American collection, it is a piece of outstanding category within the collecting of Roman mosaics. Its visual impact and subject matter make it a particularly attractive work, capable of functioning both as an archaeological testimony and as the centerpiece of a classical collection.
