DESCRIPTION
Sphinx. Ancient Egypt, Lower Epoch, 664 - 323 BC.
Bronze.
Measurements: 5 cm long.
This small Egyptian sphinx condenses in reduced format one of the most powerful images of the pharaonic imaginary. The leonine body, associated with strength and protection, is combined with a touched head, creating a hybrid figure of apotropaic and symbolic character.
The piece retains a dark green patina of great appeal, with oxidation and reddish hues typical of ancient bronze. Its silhouette, although schematic, maintains a clear reading: elongated body, high tail, marked legs and frontalized head, elements that reinforce its presence as a protective image.
In ancient Egypt, the sphinx was an emblem of power, vigilance and sacred authority. Associated with the real and divine world, its image could function as a symbolic guardian, linked to temples, ritual spaces or devotional contexts. In small-format specimens, this protective charge was transferred to the votive or personal sphere.
Its charm lies in the intensity it preserves despite its minimal dimensions: a bronze of intimate scale, of strong archaeological character and with an immediately recognizable iconography within the Egyptian repertoire.
