BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Isis breastfeeding Harpocrates. Ancient Egypt, Lower Epoch, 664 - 323 BC.
Bronze.
In good condition.
Measurements: 18,5 cm height.

Egyptian bronze figure representing Isis breastfeeding Harpocrates, one of the most significant iconographies of late Egyptian religiosity. The goddess appears seated, with the child Horus on her knees, in an image of strong protective and maternal value, linked to dynastic legitimacy, fertility and continuity of life.

During the Late Epoch, this type of representation reached a great diffusion as a devotional image. Isis, mother and protector par excellence, was one of the most venerated divinities of the Egyptian pantheon, while Harpocrates -Horus child- symbolized renewal, royalty and the triumph of life against the forces of chaos.

The piece retains a beautiful greenish patina, characteristic of ancient bronzes, and maintains a frontal and solemn presence. Because of its iconography, material and age, it is an attractive testimony of the Egyptian votive sculpture of the Late Epoch.
