DESCRIPTION
Lucerne. Rome, 4th century AD.
Terracotta.
Condition: good condition, with superficial wear, partial loss of engobe and deposits typical of its age.
Measurements: 14,7 cm long.
Late Roman terracotta lantern, with an elongated body and pronounced spout, decorated on the disk with a central vegetal motif. On both sides there are two feeding holes, while the rim has an ornamentation of geometric motifs and small circular elements that enrich the surface.
This type of skylight was part of everyday life in the late Roman Empire, illuminating domestic, funerary or ritual spaces. Its functional format does not prevent a clear decorative intention, visible in the careful design of the disc and the symmetrical organization of the motifs.
