DESCRIPTION
Lucerne. Rome, 1st - 3rd century AD.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France.
Good state of preservation.
Measurements: 11,7 cm long.
Roman terracotta lantern with an elongated profile, with a perforated upper handle, oval tank and pointed spout. The decoration is concentrated on the body by means of a radial surface of small motifs in relief, which give the piece a rich texture and a very marked ornamental effect.
Unlike other skylights centered on a figurative scene, this piece bases its appeal on the decorative rhythm and the strength of its form. The symmetrical arrangement of the reliefs around the feeding orifice generates an almost solar composition, reinforced by the verticality of the axis between handle, disc and spout.
