Iberian votive offering. Iberian culture, 4th–2nd centuries B.C.
Bronze.
Provenance: private collection of Dr. Gabriel Semplé.
Measurements: 6 cm high.
Small Iberian bronze votive offering, cast with great formal economy. The figure features a stylized body, a schematic head, and reduced limbs—characteristic features of this type of votive offering deposited in sanctuaries as an expression of devotion, gratitude, or a request to the deity.
Iberian votive offerings typically depict human figures, warriors, horsemen, or animals, and constitute one of the most significant testimonies to pre-Roman religiosity on the Iberian Peninsula. Their deliberately synthetic style does not seek an individualized portrait, but rather the symbolic efficacy of presence: a figure offered in place of or representing the devotee.
In this example, the dark patina of the bronze and the marked verticality reinforce its archaic and ritual character. Despite its small size, the piece retains a remarkable expressive power, characteristic of these objects designed to establish a direct link between the donor and the sacred realm.
