BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Aphrodite. Ancient Egypt, Hellenistic Period, 3rd century B.C.
Terracotta.
Thermoluminescence test included.
Measurements: 19.5 cm high.

Female terracotta figure identifiable as Aphrodite, made in Hellenistic Egypt, a period in which Egyptian religious and artistic traditions coexisted with iconographic models from the Greek world. The piece depicts the goddess standing, with her torso partially bare, her cloak draped diagonally across her body, and a marked attention to her hairstyle and ornaments—characteristic features of small terracotta figures used for devotion and domestic purposes during the Ptolemaic period.

The figure combines the sensuality typical of Aphrodite with a frontal and schematic treatment, closer to Egyptian coroplastic production than to large-scale Greek sculpture. The modeling of the body, the folds of the cloak, and the crown or headdress reinforce its votive character, likely linked to cults of fertility, female protection, and prosperity.

During the Hellenistic Period, the image of Aphrodite became widely disseminated in Egypt, where she was assimilated into local deities associated with fertility, beauty, and regeneration. These terracotta figures circulated widely in domestic, funerary, and sanctuary contexts as accessible objects of private devotion.

The work retains an archaeological surface with wear, concretions, and losses characteristic of its age. The presence of thermoluminescence testing provides significant technical support for its cataloging, reinforcing the piece’s significance as a testament to the religious and artistic syncretism of Hellenistic Egypt.
