DESCRIPTION
Anthropomorphic figure. Mezcala, State of Guerrero, Mexico, c. 300–100 B.C.
Stone.
Condition: good.
Provenance: Victor Brox Collection, Lancashire, United Kingdom, 1941–2023.
Measurements: 9.4 cm in height.
Small-scale Mezcala anthropomorphic figure carved in stone, characterized by a marked formal synthesis. The piece features a compact body, a schematic head, and limbs reduced to essential volumes, within the abstract language characteristic of stone sculpture from the State of Guerrero.
The Mezcala culture developed one of the most unique sculptural traditions of ancient Mexico, based on the geometric reduction of the human figure and the use of stone as a symbolic material. Its pieces, often carved from green, gray, or mottled stone, stand out for their frontal orientation, their economy of form, and their intense ritual presence.
This type of figure has been associated with ritual, funerary, or prestige contexts, possibly as protective images, emblems of lineage, or ancestral representations. Its provenance from the Victor Brox Collection in the United Kingdom adds further interest to the piece, which is an attractive example of the abstraction and formal power of Mezcala sculpture.
