DESCRIPTION
Bowl. Nazca, Peru, ca. 200–600 AD.
Ceramic.
Provenance: private collection, France.
In generally good condition, with slight chipping along the rim
Measurements: 7.7 cm high; 8.8 cm in diameter.
Ceramic bowl belonging to the Nazca culture, one of the great artistic traditions of ancient Peru, renowned for the technical and chromatic quality of its pottery. The piece features an open profile, a slightly curved body, and painted decoration on the upper rim, arranged in stylized anthropomorphic motifs.
The ornamentation, rendered in black, cream, and red tones on the ceramic background, reflects the characteristic Nazca visual language, based on simplified forms, defined contours, and a strong symbolic meaning. The faces depicted on the decorative band refer to the ritual and mythical universe of this culture, in which human figures, animals, and hybrid beings played a central role.
The piece preserves the balance between functionality and ceremonial value characteristic of Nazca ceramics. Its small size, the vibrancy of its polychromy, and the clarity of its motifs make it an appealing testament to a tradition that reached one of the most refined moments in pre-Columbian Andean ceramics.
