DESCRIPTION
Bowl. Nazca, Peru, c. 100–700 CE.
Polychrome terracotta.
Provenance: private collection, Wilma and Max Schuhmacher.
Accompanied by Oxford Test No. 281j46.
Measurements: 13.2 cm in diameter.
Polychrome terracotta Nazca bowl, open-shaped with a low profile, decorated on the exterior with a band of geometric motifs. The piece features a composition of great visual clarity, based on the alternation of triangular shapes, rectangular fields, and vertical lines, painted in shades of black, reddish, and cream.
The Nazca culture, which developed on the southern coast of Peru, produced some of the most refined ceramic art in the pre-Columbian Andean world. Its vessels are characterized by their rich colors, precise design, and the use of symbolic motifs—both figurative and abstract—linked to a complex ritual and ceremonial universe.
In this example, the geometric decoration is arranged in a continuous band that encircles the body of the bowl, creating rhythm and compositional balance. The simplicity of the form is a hallmark of its contrast with the graphic power of the painted motifs, which reflect the synthetic and highly codified visual language of Nazca ceramics.
