This amulet takes the form of a fascinum, a phallic symbol to which Roman culture attributed apotropaic properties. Far from having solely erotic significance, these emblems were used to attract good fortune and protect against the evil eye and other harmful influences. The motif is widely documented on Roman amulets, household objects, and hanging ornaments.

The figure features a body with a pronounced horizontal projection, with the anatomical elements stylized in a simplified manner and an upper ring that allowed it to be suspended. The movement produced when it was hung reinforced the image’s animated character; in more complex tintinnabula, the phallic motif was combined with chains and small bells, whose sound also contributed to its protective efficacy. Comparable examples of winged phalli with rings and chains are preserved in the British Museum.

Its small size suggests close, everyday use, likely as a protective pendant or as part of a suspended ensemble. The piece thus encapsulates one of the most characteristic images of Roman popular religiosity, in which a deliberately striking form served as a symbolic defense by attracting and neutralizing the harmful gaze.
