BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Female head. Roman, 1st–3rd centuries AD.
Carved marble.
Provenance: private collection, France.
In good condition.
Measurements: 8 cm high.

This female head belongs to the Roman tradition of small-scale sculpture, likely intended to be part of a votive, decorative, or funerary figure. The face is characterized by a pronounced frontal orientation and idealized features: almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, closed lips, and a compact oval face, differing from the individualization typical of more naturalistic private portraits.

The hair, arranged in wavy locks around the forehead and gathered at the nape of the neck, frames the face without requiring a meticulous rendering of the hairstyle. The carving thus concentrates the expression on the essential volumes, while surface wear has softened the transitions between the features and reinforced the image’s simplicity.

Roman sculpture frequently drew on female models of Greek descent to represent deities, personifications, or idealized figures. The absence of preserved attributes makes it impossible to determine her identity, but the serenity of her countenance and the balanced composition of her features place the piece within the classical tradition that Rome maintained and reinterpreted throughout the Imperial period.
