This small vessel for inhaling ointments is a refined example of Egyptian stonework from the Middle Kingdom. Its profile combines a cylindrical body with pronounced shoulders, a tapered neck, and an open mouth with a gently flared rim—a design that facilitated bringing the aromatic substances contained within closer to the face.

The piece was carved to take advantage of the ornamental qualities of Egyptian alabaster, a variety of calcite prized for its translucency and the richness of its veining. Concentric bands in shades of cream, ochre, and reddish hues run along the vessel and accentuate its structure, making the stone’s natural variations an essential part of its aesthetic effect.

Containers for ointments and aromatic preparations were part of both daily life and Egyptian funerary goods. The specimen’s excellent state of preservation and its provenance from the Bengt Söderbergh collection reinforce its archaeological and collectible value.
