This small container belongs to the category of ancient Egyptian toiletries. It was used to hold kohl, an eye cosmetic typically made from pulverized minerals, such as galena or malachite, which was applied around the eyes using a thin stick. In addition to its aesthetic function, the Egyptians attributed protective properties to these preparations.

The piece features an ingenious structure consisting of four connected longitudinal compartments, whose lobed arrangement is echoed in the profile of the lid. This compartmentalization allowed for the storage of different preparations within a single compact and easily transportable object. Comparable Egyptian containers made of wood are known to exist, featuring various tubes and hinged or swiveling lids. The simplicity of the carving and the attention paid to its design reflect the importance that cosmetic objects held in everyday Egyptian life.
