The piece belongs to the Gnathian ceramic tradition, which developed primarily in Apulia during the 4th century B.C. and later spread to other centers in southern Italy. This technique is characterized by the application of white, yellow, and reddish pigments onto a surface covered with black glaze, a process that allowed for the creation of vividly contrasting ornamentation without resorting to the clay-reserve technique typical of red-figure pottery.

The vessel takes the form of an olpe, a jug designed to hold and serve liquids, with an ovoid body, an annular foot, a narrow neck, and two vertical handles connecting the shoulder to the rim. The decoration is concentrated in the upper part of the body: a band of oval motifs and dots frames a central plant-like element, accompanied by rosettes and small white lines.

The distribution of the ornamentation on the neck and shoulders—leaving much of the body covered only by the black glaze—reflects a common trend in Gnathia’s late production. Vine motifs, rosettes, and other elements associated with the Dionysian world were common in this repertoire, which was particularly well-suited for vessels used in the consumption and serving of wine.
