This work depicts the famous courtesan Katsuyama, who became a tayuu (high-ranking courtesan) in the Yoshiwara district of Tokyo in 1646 and achieved celebrity status in 1653, due to her innovative style, releasing her pet bird.
Adachi Gink? was a Japanese artist known for his prints in the ukiyo-e style as a member of the Utagawa school. He produced yakusha-e (portraits of actors), as well as for his senso-e (war prints). He studied with the Western-style painter Horyu Goseda before turning to woodcut and the Utagawa school in the 1870s. He completed his first etching in 1873 and continued to produce new designs in a wide variety of genres until 1908. During the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), Ginko worked as a war correspondent, creating scenes from the front in triptych format for an enthusiastic audience at home.
