Jingasa of soldier monk or samurai made by My?chin Munesuke, who was a leading Edo-era maker of ornate helmets and armor, known as one of the greatest masters of metal embossing (hammered forms). Works by him are preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

The jingasa was a conical war helmet used in Japan, especially by samurai and ashigaru (foot soldiers) during the Edo period (1603-1868). Although its main function was to protect the head, in some martial arts schools it was taught to be used as an improvised shield in combat. They were made of various materials such as iron, copper, wood, paper, bamboo or leather, and were often lacquered and decorated with family coats of arms (mon). In addition to its practical use, the jingasa also served as a symbol of status and authority, especially for lower-ranking samurai and other officials.
